Bible Bowl

Bible Bowl August 30, 2008

Book: Exodus

Omitting Chapters 25-30 and 35-40

It is time to start preparing for Bible Bowl 2008. The benefits of Bible Bowl are fantastic if both adults and young people embrace it in each congregation. The Bible Bowl book this year is from the Old Testament. It is the book of:  Exodus, omitting chapters 25-30 and 35-40.

Join us for an enjoyable Saturday of fellowship, knowledge and energy! This is a great opportunity to grow individually as well as a congregation while you are preparing for the Bible Bowl throughout this summer.

The Sanford Bible Bowl has been an exciting event since it started in 1991 and the excitement continues today. It is a proven element of churches’ outreach to lost souls and a great tool to strengthen and encourage within the church.

We would dearly love to reach more souls in this worthwhile effort. The men of the congregation will be available upon request should you want someone to present the exciting opportunities of the Bible Bowl to your congregation.

We are very excited for this year’s event as we are planning some new things for 2008. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Sanford Church of Christ.

FACTS AND RULES CONCERNING THE BIBLE BOWL

The following rules are meant only to make the event both enjoyable and orderly.  They are not meant to work a hardship on any congregation, but we will adhere to them.  Of course, every congregation is on the honor system, as we will not be "checking up" unless an infraction is brought to our attention.

Division

Teams will be divided in two divisions, Jr. & Sr. divisions. Jr. teams will be made up of

1st-6th grade. Sr. teams will be made up of 7th- 12th grade.

You should determine the grade level of an individual by determining which grade he will be in on the date of the Bible Bowl.  Those who have graduated from high school are not eligible.  Jr.'s may be on a Sr. team, but Sr.'s may not be on a Jr. team.  Any team which has even one senior must participate as a Senior team.  For example, a team consisting of one 5th, two 6th, and one 7th grader must participate as a senior team.

Teams

Each congregation may have as many teams as they have young people to fill them.

Each team will consist of four members.  The members may be of varying grades as long as the team participates in the proper division.  For example, a 3rd, two 5th, and one 6th grader may all participate on one team in the junior division.

Each team will be made up from within the young people of one congregation.  In the event that a single congregation does not have enough young people which wish to participate in a given division, that congregation may join forces with some young people from a sister congregation in order to be able to participate.  It is also acceptable for your team to invite young friends from the community to participate if they do not have enough to fill a team.

Each team should have one alternate who would like to participate if one of the regular team members becomes ill or for some other reason cannot participate.  If the alternates are not needed on his or her home team, they may be needed by another congregation which has only three on a team.  All alternates, individuals, and partial teams, will be allowed to participate either with another team or individually.  No one will be excluded.  Those who do not participate with a full team will be eligible for individual awards.

Questions

To have uniformity, the questions will be taken from the King James version of the Bible.  We realize that other translations are available.  However, nearly all homes have a King James Version.  No other version is so universally owned.  The questions will be fairly equally spread through the material which is assigned, so overall knowledge is the goal.

The questions will be multiple choice and contain three choices each.  The questions will cover only the material actually printed in the Bible.  Questions will deal only with the facts and statements of the Bible, not the application or implications of those facts.  We feel that this is the only way to be fair to all ages and capabilities.  For example, if questions were being asked over Acts 8, we would not ask if the Ethiopian eunuch was buried in water when he was baptized.

That information is not specifically stated in the account.  We might ask, however, "What did the eunuch do when he was baptized?: (a) stand on the bank (b) go down into the water (c) sit in the water." The correct answer would be "b".

Both the Jr. & Sr. teams will answer the same questions, but will only compete with other teams in their division.

Scoring

Each round will consist of 20 questions.  Each correct answer by a team member will be worth ten points.  If all four team members give the correct answer, a bonus of 1O points will be given.  It will therefore be possible for a team to score 50 points per question.  If only three team members get the question right, the team score will be 30; two correct, 20 pts.; one, 10 pts..

There will be five rounds of scoring previous to the semi-finals.  The scores of each team from these five rounds will- be added to each other as the rounds progress.  The four top scoring teams in the Jr. division and the four top scoring teams in the senior division will be in the semifinal round.  The semi-final, and final rounds will consist of twenty questions each.  Each round will eliminate half the teams remaining.  The highest scoring half of the teams in each division will advance to the next round until there is a winner.

Individual Scores

Team coaches will also keep track of the individual scores of their team members through the first five rounds.  The number of correct answers by each individual through the first five rounds will be tabulated.  The highest three individual scorers in each division will be awarded.  The highest individual scorer on each team will be recognized.

Format

Each team member will be seated so that they cannot see what answer their other team members are giving.  Each team member will have a file folder with three large cards inside lettered "A", "B", & “C”

The question will be read first and then the choice of answers.  The question will be read a second time and then the answers.  A five second waiting period will follow the second reading.  "Time" will be called and each team member will immediately hold up a card with what they believe is the correct lettered answer.  The correct answer will then be called out.  All team members with the correct answer will keep their cards in the air while those with the wrong answer will lower theirs.  Scores will then be tabulated.  After the score has been tabulated, the next question will be asked and so on through the round.
