Early History

The Lord’s church was established about A.D. 33. Peter and the other apostles preached on the Day of Pentecost and about 3,000 souls were added to the church after hearing the Word, repenting, and being baptized for the remission of their sins. (Acts Chapter 2)

The early members of the Sanford congregation met at the Civitan building in Sanford, in addition to members’ homes, and local nursing homes. The members invited Mike and Teresa Glenn to come teach a teachers’ workshop over the Labor Day weekend in 1990 with 42 people attending the workshop at the Wicker’s house for the event. The workshop provided the members with better teaching skills needed to instruct the children of the congregation.

In 1991, the congregation was able to support a full-time preacher with Mike Glenn becoming Sanford’s first full-time preacher. Also in 1991, Sanford hosted our first Bible Bowl, after a wonderful experience at a Bible Bowl in Tennessee the year prior. The congregation continued growing as Pat and Maria Cowden joined the congregation, and Pat continued on to preach for other congregations on an as needed basis, and began involvement in the missionary work in Honduras, and the Northern Mariana Islands, Saipan.

In 1993 construction of the church building began and was completed in 1996.
